On
Wednesday, the Judge said that mp3.com
Willfully Violated the
copyrights of Universal Music (UMG).
Read the story here Read the entire finding here Michaels Minute (From MP3.com) The other 4 "Major Labels" settled out of court for approx $20 Million each. Why has UMG decided to push for $450 Million? This would put MP3.Com out of business, leaving over 80,000 independent artists right where the major labels want them, NOWHERE. What was MP3.Com guilty of? They purchased 80,000 Music CDs, ripped them to MP3 files, created a service called MyMP3 where after proving you owned the CD by inserting it into your CD player and letting them scan it for the number, you could listen to the same music you own, anywhere you could connect to MP3.Com. MP3.Com went to great lengths to develop the software to verify that the user who wanted to download or stream the music of major labels actually owned the CD. Sound like something is amiss here? It most certainly is. This is about control and outdated business models, and artists rights, not the labels rights. Some people have called for a boycott of UMG (Universal Music Group) via e-mail. As of yet I feel it may be a little early. Lets wait to see if they settle before the "hanging judge" decides on the exact amount. (Besides, November/December would be a much better time to boycott UMG). |
