Windows 2000 or XP; and Easy CD Creator Deluxe 3.5x

You should print this before you attempt to apply this fix.

The first officially supported version of Easy CD Creator under Windows 2000 was Easy CD Creator Deluxe 4.02.

Editors Note: Easy CD Creator Deluxe 4.02 (on the Yamaha and Panasonic, or any CD-R,CD-RW (SCSI or IDE) made by Matsushita) sometimes does not record properly, even though it states the recording is successful. I recommend Easy CD Creator 3.5c. This notes applies to Windows 95, Windows 98 Windows NT 4 Workstation and Server, Windows 2000 Professional and Server Families. I have not tested Easy CD Creator Deluxe 4.02 on Windows 2000 Datacenter Server as of Friday, February 13, 2004.

Easy CD Creator Deluxe 4.0x will work with Windows XP through Build 2542 for both Home and Professional. It also works on Windows Whistler Server and Advanced Server (through Build 3505) and Windows Whistler Datacenter Server Build 2462. Here are the recommended steps for installing on the Windows XP versions listed in this paragraph:

  1. RIGHT click the CD-Burner in Windows Explorer
  2. Click on the Recording Tab (as show below)
  3. Uncheck the Enable CD recording on this drive (disabling Windows XP's built-in CD recorder) (as shown below)

  4. Install the original version (4.0) of Easy CD Creator Deluxe (DO NOT REBOOT)
  5. Install the upgrade from version 4.0 to 4.0x (If you have all the updates since the initial release, then install them in order (to 4.02, to 4.03, to 4.05) WITHOUT rebooting). Or, you may go from version 4.0 to version 4.05.
  6. After you have installed the last update (currently 4.05), then shutdown and restart the system.

The information on these pages is provided to assist you in using older versions of Adaptec/Roxio software under Windows 2000. Please do not call Adaptec Technical Support for help with the installation or use of any version of Easy CD Creator Deluxe other than 5.0x under Windows 2000 or XP.

Additionally, do not be upset if the provider of this page does not reply instantly (though I will try to help if I can) to your questions as he does not work for or support any Adaptec or Roxio product.

In order to use Easy CD Creator Deluxe 3.5x with Windows 2000 or XP, you will need to upgrade to the latest Easy CD Creator Deluxe 3.5x release. Before installing Easy CD Creator Deluxe 3.5x on your Windows 2000 system, please follow these instructions to ensure a smooth migration.

WARNING!!! Improperly performing these steps may leave your system no longer functioning. Read the following steps carefully:

Installation Steps

  1. Click here to download a file, which will allow you to install Easy CD Creator Deluxe 3.5x on your Windows 2000 or XP system. You will need Admin rights to run this application. It is critical that you run this application, before installing Easy CD Creator. Otherwise, you may experience hangs during boot.
  2. Install your original copy of Easy CD Creator 3.x. During installation, you may get a warning message saying the program may not run correctly on Windows because of enhanced operating system features. Just ignore this message and click to continue. After the end of installation, it is not necessary to reboot the system. The system will need to be rebooted at the end of step 3.
  3. If your package came with Easy CD Creator 3.5c, then you can skip to step #4. Otherwise, you need to get the Easy CD Creator Deluxe 3.5c upgrade. After the upgrade is completed, you need to reboot the system. [Search google for the name of the upgrade file: cdc-35c.exe]
  4. At this point, you should have Easy CD Creator Deluxe 3.5c working on your Windows 2000 or XP system. You can verify this by checking the About box in the Help menu of the Easy CD Creator Deluxe application.
bullet Adaptec nor Roxio no longer support Easy CD Creator Deluxe 3.5x.

Troubleshooting

If Easy CD Creator Deluxe is hanging at its splash screen, then you likely did not perform step #3 as described above.

Problem with zero length ASPI file. There have been a handful of problems reported with a zero length ASPI32.SYS file. This file is placed in your Winnt\System32\Drivers folder. If you encounter this problem, click here for instructions to resolve it. The symptom you will see when running Easy CD Creator is that "ASPI" was not able to initialize.

If you copy an image to your clipboard, and then paste it into the Jewel Case Editor, the program may fault. This is not seen under Windows 9x or NT 4.

When running CD Copier, the copy progress indicator might appear behind the main window. If you click on it, it will come to the front and it will stay there.

The Adaptec AHA-1540 (ISA DMA Host Adapter), or clone SCSI host adapter, does not work with Easy CD Creator under Windows 2000. We have investigated this and determined that Easy CD Creator does not cause the problem. However, we are making a patch available that attempts to work around the OS limitation. Click here to download a zipped REG file. Then unzip the file and double-click on it to add the necessary workaround keys to your system registry.

Easy CD Creator Deluxe 3.5x does not support USB or 1394 drives under Windows 2000 or XP. In order to use these devices under Windows 2000 or XP, you will need to upgrade to Easy CD Creator 4.05 or higher.

Zero-Length ASPI File Problem

While booting a system following the installation of Easy CD Creator Deluxe, Windows NT, 2000, or XP generates a "Windows - Unable to Load Device Driver" message box with the detail: "\SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Aspi32.SYSASPI32.SYS device driver could not be loaded. Error Status was 0xC0000020". Further inspection of ASPI32.SYS in Explorer reveals that the file is empty (0 bytes long).

Resolution

  1. Insert the Easy CD Creator Deluxe installation CD-ROM into one of your CD drives. When the Master Setup program launches, simply click the close or Exit buttons. Note the letter of the CD drive that has the Easy CD Creator Deluxe CD-ROM using Explorer. "G:" will be assumed in the remaining steps, so substitute your drive letter wherever "G:" is seen.
  2. Using "Find" or "Search" on the "Start" menu, locate all copies of the file "WININIT.TMP" on your local hard drives. It is most likely in one or more temporary "TEMP" directories on your machine. The directories may be hidden, so make sure Explorer is configured to search for hidden files (in Explorer enable either "View-Options...-Show all files" or "Tools-View-Hidden files and folders-Show hidden files and folders").
  3. Delete all the occurrences of the "WININIT.TMP" found in Step 2.
  4. Select "Run" from the "Start" menu and then type "G:\ENGLISH\DISK1\ASPIINST FORCE". Type the command exactly as shown, but substitute the drive letter from Step 1 for "G:". Click "OK".
  5. The Adaptec ASPI Upgrade utility will run. Click "Yes" when asked if you wish to continue.
  6. Click "Upgrade" when instructed to do so by the program. After a short wait, verify that the upgrade completes without error, and then click "Reboot" when instructed to do so. Do not ignore this step. Failing to reboot at this point may prevent ASPI from working properly.

After rebooting, verify that the "Windows - Unable to Load Device Driver" message box is no longer displayed, and that Easy CD Creator Deluxe 3.5x should now function properly.
