I would like everyone whom attends Austin Business College in Austin, Texas to know the following information (because it could happen to you).
I took the Windows NT 4.0 MCSE Track in April 2000, a 3 month course. The course cost $6395.00 (of which I had to borrow the money as I was unemployed at the time and not eligible for Financial Aid) and included all materials including six (6) test vouchers to take the six (6) exams covered. In addition to the course materials, Austin Business College also promised Job Placement assistance.
I completed my last exam successfully on the morning of the last day of the last class. I then asked to be put in touch with the Job Placement Coordinator since one of the reasons for taking the course at the Austin Business College was because of the Job Placement Assistance.
I then checked back in late August and was told that Tammy Stewart handled this but she was out of the office that day (a Friday). I was passed to her voice mail. This happened the next two (2) days I called (Monday and Tuesday). The fourth (4th) call, which was also passed to voice mail, could not be left because Tammy's voice mailbox was full. Goodbye.
I, at this point, was beginning to realize I'd been taken for a ride and prey to false advertising on the part of the Business College.
In October 2000, I moved to my new residence. I faxed a copy of the change of address to the Austin Business College so they could update their records. I received no confirmation in any medium of contact.
I received a notice regarding the summer course for 2001. This notice had been forwarded from my old address. This notice included the new Windows 2000 MCSE Track with the same promises as were made with the Windows NT 4.0 MCSE Track.
You can imagine how upset I was when I called the Austin Business College with regard to this new notice of classes.
I spoke briefly with the Admissions Director, Pam who explained that they do offer Job Placement Assistance and was quickly forwarded to one Tammy Stewart. Ms. Stewart, you may remember mentioned above had not returned any of my calls from late August. You can further imagine my surprise when I was told that she had been out of the office due to an early pregnancy. Her voice mail had not been updated and the receptionist (secretary, administrative assistant or whatever the current PC term is) has been so unkind not to advise me of this and offer to send me to another colleague whom would be covering for Tammy Stewart.
After I explained my situation and what I was promised in the least of civil mood, I calmed down and made an appointment for the following day, Wednesday, February 14, 2001. I met with Tammy whom then apologized for the fall fiasco. We discussed my resume and my interviewing skills. She determined that my resume did not have enough "white" space on it (meaning there was too much information). She also advised me to work on some interview skills. My next appointment was on President's Day, February 19, 2001. By then, Tammy promised to have revised my resume so that she and I could go over it. I agreed.
I arrived a little early at my President's Day appointment. I found out that Tammy had not completed her task as promised. I did not address this as an issue as she promised again to have this Tuesday, February 20, 2001 by 2:00 pm or I was to give her a call.
Today is Tuesday, February 20, 2001 and it's 3:15 pm. I just called Austin Business College and spoke to Melinda (the receptionist mentioned above) whom offered to take a message for Ms. Stewart whom was "out." After further interrogation, I found out that Ms. Stewart had not even been on Tuesday and was expected in the office on Wednesday, February 21, 2001.
This part will be faxed to the Austin Business College and placed on the web at http://come.to/badservice.
I decided not to fax this to the Austin Business College as they would probably deny receiving it anyway.
Update: Wednesday, February 21, 2001 3:30pm:
I called for Tammy Stewart. I spoke with "Becky" who stated Tammy was in today and proceeded to transfer my call to Tammy only to come back and tell me that Tammy had mysteriously disappeared from the office. I left my name and callback number.
I have been very patient despite the person whom loaned me the $6395.00 has badgered me since the completion of the class. I am told by Valerie Brown (one of the other students in my class) that I am able to report this to the Better Business Bureau (which is next to the Austin Business College) and to the State Attorney General. I am investigating this.
Update: Tuesday, February 27, 2001 1:00pm:
I spoke with Becky, Tammy's assistant on Thursday, February 22, 2001 3:45pm. Becky stated that Tammy has been in a conference all week and had not forgotten me. I told Becky that I would call on Monday, February 26, 2001. I had changed my mind in effort to be more cooperative. I'm calling as I write this to you. Melinda took a message for Tammy, stating she was at lunch.

It is interesting that with all the competition in the Austin Area for education such as Austin Community College or New Horizons Learning Center, you would think the Austin Business College would be more apt to appease their students especially since it is much easier and faster to distribute information in 2001 than in 1971.
James, I wish you the best of luck and would advise you to follow Valerie Brown's advice with regards to the Better Business Bureau (the office you mentioned in your letter is located on the BBB website in the previous link) and the State Attorney General of Texas Consumer Protection Division.
Good Luck!
